For the Lost and the Brave van Ray Toro is een eerbetoon aan de transgender teenager Leelah Alcorn, die in 2014 tragisch aan haar einde kwam door zelfmoord te plegen.
Op 28 december 2014 nam zij zichzelf van het leven omdat zij zich niet fijn voelde in haar eigen lichaam en haar ouders dit niet accepteerden.
Ray Toro, vroeger bassist van de band My Chemical Romance, publiceerde het nummer ter nagedachtenis van deze transgender. Hij had het nummer al een tijd 'in de digitale kast staan' maar vond nooit een geschikt moment om het te publiceren. In 2015 bracht hij deze singel uit.
“Net zoals jullie je voelden, voelde ik me ook niet goed na het lezen van het nieuws over de jonge Leelah Alcorn, die haar eigen leven ontnam, mijn hart zonk. Ik voelde me ziek. Nòg een jong leven dat weg is omdat het niet gehoord werd, niet begrepen werd en niet onvoorwaardelijk van werd gehouden om wie zij echt was. Na het lezen van haar verhaal en het lezen van haar laatste Tumblr post, voelde ik dat het tijd was om dit nummer te delen.”
