Antony
and the Johnsons is een band uit New York, samengesteld rond de
zangeres/componiste Anohni die voormalig bekendstond als Antony
Hegarty. Antony and the Johnsons maakt vooral ballads en hun nummers
worden wel omschreven als ‘kamermuziek’, vanwege het gebruik van
strijkers en houtblazers. De bijzondere falset van Anohni is bepalend
voor het geluid van Antony and the Johnsons. Ze braken in 2005 door met
hun album I Am a Bird Now. Divine - Anthony and the
Johnsons This song is a tribute
to Harris
Glenn Milstead, most well known as the performer and actor, Divine, who
died in 1988. Divine starred in several of John Waters' films. Antony
has spoken of John Waters' films as being among her biggest
inspirations while studying performance art and theater and NYU.
This
song is an obituary of sorts, with lyrics that show Antony’s deep
gratitude and reverence for Divine’s work and spirit.
Antony and the Johnsons is the debut album by Antony and the Johnsons,
recorded in 1998 and released officially in 2000.
Goodbye, baby Baby, goodbye Divine, oh Divine Falling like a picture
of time
Oh, he was the Mother of
America He was my
self-determined guru Myself, I hold your big
fat heart in my hands Well I hold your
bleeding heart in my hands
A supernova A flame on fire Shining in the darkness
Did someone mention a
rapture? Well I turn to think of
you Who walked the way with
so much pain? Who holds the mirror up
to fools?
And I'll murder the
ingrates Who stand in our way And I'll swallow shit,
laughing On my bed of hay
And I hold your burning
heart in my hands And I hold your burning
heart in my hands
