William Brown (1916)

Female-to-male transgender, William Brown, was forced to leave the Nelson's Navy in 1816 after being “outed” by a newspaper. Brown, who’s birth name is unknown, was reputed to be a black person who was born female. Brown served In the Royl Navy for 12 years with him last serving on the Queen Charlotte.

The story goes that Brown was born in Edinburgh, joined the navy  in 1804 and served until 1816, even after Brown's birth sex was discovered in 1815.
