Underground
drag performer, master (or "mistress" if you prefer) of ceremonies,
film maker and actor, "Peaches Christ", born Joshua Grannell, currently
hails from San Francisco, California, where her Backlash Production
Company and popular Midnight Mass movie series are based.
Midnight Mass, the San
Francisco midnight movie event that began in the summer of 1998 with
elaborate pre-show stage productions, drag spectacles and famous guest
stars including Mink Stole, Tura Satana, Mary Woronov, RuPaul, Erica
Gavin, Patrick Bristow, Cassandra Peterson (Elvira Mistress, of the
Dark), and John Waters, continue to draw sell-out crowds to this day.
Touring the world over, her Midnight Mass road-show and Short Film
Retrospective have been seen in such places as Seattle, Berkeley, New
York City, Brussels, Belgium, and Switzerland.
In 2005,
"Peaches" released a CD single entitled Idol Worship, and in September
of 2007, the San Francisco de Young Museum hosted the Decade of Peaches
Christ Retrospective. Entitled "Cattychism", it featured artistic
contributions inspired by "Peaches Christ", including ten years of
costume design by long-time collaborator Tria Connell and ten years of
graphic design by artist Chris Hatfield.
In 2008, the HDnet Movie Channel and executive producer Mark
Cuban aired the 10th Annual Season of her Midnight Mass stage-show. The
six-part series is titled Midnight Mass with your Hostess Peaches
Christ. Hi-Def 30 minute episodes centered around "Peaches" and
Midnight Mass preceding uninterrupted screenings of her favorite films.
Other television productions that "Peaches" has appeared on include
VH1’s Totally Gay!, AMC’s Movies That Shook the World: Pink Flamingos,
and IFC’s Cult Movie pilot, and was prominently featured as a
protesting drag queen in Gus Van Sant's 2008 feature film Milk,
starring Sean Penn. "Peaches"
appeared in numerous other films as well, including Spin the Bottle, a
"drag-umentary" chronicling life behind the scenes at Midnight Mass and
is a send-up of Madonna: Truth or Dare. Spin the Bottle was written by
her alter-ego Joshua Grannell and directed by San Francisco filmmaker
Scott Boswell. "Peaches Christ" also a co-produces, along with artist
and musician Visantos, the San Francisco Underground Short Film
Festival, which was originally designed to showcase talented but
overlooked Bay Area filmmakers.
Written and directed by
her alter-ego Joshua Grannell, "Peaches Christ" stars in a number of
short films fondly referred to as the Tran-ilogy of Terror. These three
films, reverently tipping their hats to horror classics, include Season
of the Troll, A Nightmare On Castro Street, and Whatever Happened to
Peaches Christ?. Her fourth short film, Grindhouse, currently being
developed into a feature-length film, is a gore comedy to be shot in
the Bay Area in 2009 entitled All About Evil. Performing at film
festivals, in movie theatres, and on University campuses "Peaches
Christ" often tours with her short film collection and presents it as
part of An Evening With Peaches Christ, a multi-media show including
live singing, and the screening of her short films, with "Peaches"
telling stories, sharing behind-the-scenes anecdotes throughout the
program, and closing with an audience Q&A. Often substituting
for hostess and fellow drag performer "Heklinka", "Peaches Christ"
continues to appear at the Trannyshack where she got her start in 1996.
